A 44-YEAR-OLD man has dragged his wife to court for divorce on allegation that she drinks too much beer and comes home late.

This is in a case in which Lewis Chimbili of Barlastone area sued his wife, Florence Kapalangwe, 34, for divorce.

The two got married in 1998 and have six children.

Chimbili told Senior Court Magistrate Pauline Newa sitting with Magistrate Miyanda Banda at Matero Local Court that problems in their marriage started in 2004 when Kapalangwe started drinking excessively and started coming home late.

He explained that every time he returned from work he did not find Kapalangwe at home, and that she had stopped bathing the children.

He said both families held meetings on several occasions to try and resolve the couple’s issues but to no avail.

Chimbili said in 2011, he went to Malawi to attend his father’s funeral. On his way back, he telephoned home but he was told that Kapalangwe was seeing another man.

Chimbili further said that Kapalangwe denied having an extra marital affair but he later confirmed her illicit activities with the help of Airtel.

“I forgave Kapalangwe hoping to see a change but to no avail. It is better we divorce because I don’t see any signs of change and she has no respect for me, as a husband,” said Chimbili.

In defence, Kapalangwe said that Chimbili deserted home for three years and denied her conjugal rights for two years.

She explained that Chimbili put a blanket between his legs and got upset whenever she touched him and always came home with shaved pubic hair.

Kapalangwe said she was trying by all means to keep Chimbili because she still loved him.

Magistrate Newa granted the couple divorce and ordered Chimbili to compensate Kapalangwe with K8, 000.

She also said that Kapalangwe must be given 30 percent of all properties acquired during the subsistence of their marriage.
