Some senior council officers at the Kitwe City Council (KCC) are being investigated in the illegal sale of land which led to the suspension of the councillors at the local authority, Kitwe City Council administrator Chazya Brian Musukuma has said.

He said the investigations into the illegal sale of land were still going on as it was not only councillors being probed, but also some chief officers.

Mr Musukuma said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that investigations which were being carried out regarding the illegal allocation of land in the city were aimed at establishing the truth and possibly cleaning up the mess.

“Investigations regarding the illegal sale of land are still going on. On issues of chief officers being involved in the illegal sale of land, I can tell you that it is not only suspended councillors who are being investigated, even chief officers,” he said. Mr Musukuma said following the suspension of councillors, the council was working hard to seal the loopholes which were the source of the illegal sale of land.

He said it was discovered that the system became so porous that councillors were running the show and involving themselves in the illegal sale of land.

“We are tightening the nuts regarding the illegal sale of land. As a council, we are not allowing the sale of land between individuals. Those who want to buy land from individuals, there are doing it at their own risk. The council will not be responsible for such kind of business,” Mr Musukuma said.

And Mr Musukuma said union leaders and council workers who want to get actively involved in politics should disengage and concentrate on politics.

He said even President Edgar Lungu had made it clear that those who work for the Government should not get involved in partisan politics.

“Any person who works for the Government and draws his or her salary from the Ministry of Finance should not get involved in partisan politics. Those who want politics, they should disengage and concentrate on politics. Even President Lungu has made this point clear,” Mr Musukuma said.
