A 23-YEAR-OLD mini bus driver who allegedly hit a traffic police officer and was subsequently slapped with five charges has been fined K3,500.
The five charges were being an unlicensed driver, driving under the influence of liquor, failing to obey police officers’ directives, driving uninsured motor vehicle and driving a vehicle without certificate of fitness,
This is in a case in which Steven Phiri of Mtendere is also charged with attempted murder of Woman Constable Marjorie Moyo.
Phiri was fined by Lusaka Magistrate Humphrey Chitalu after pleading guilty to all the five minor charges.
He was in count of unlicensed driver fined K400 or 9 months imprisonment with hard labour and in count two of driving under the influence of liquor was fined K2,000 or 9 months imprisonment.
In counts three of failing to obey police officers’ directives was fined K200 and in default to 9 months imprisonment; for driving uninsured motor vehicle he was fined K600 or 9 months imprisonment.
He was in the last count facing a charge of driving a vehicle without certificate of fitness fined K300 or in default to 9 months imprisonment with hard labour.
Phiri is remanded in custody on charges of attempted murder as he awaits committal to the High Court for trial.
Phiri is alleged to have on February 27 attempted to murder Ms Moyo by hitting her with a mini bus at a police road block along Great East Road in Lusaka. She has been evacuated to South Africa for specialist treatment.
